PLASTOX project presented at European Parliament conference

PLASTOX project presented at European Parliament conference

The project on ecotoxicological impacts of microplastics on marine organisms outlined its activities at a conference which was held in the framework of the Intergroup on Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas.
The JPI Oceans PLASTOX project was presented by coordinator Andy Booth in the one day conference on “Marine Litter - Europe’s answers to a global challenge”. Discussions in the first session focused on 'Are there solutions to this global environmental problem?'. The discussions in the second session focused on 'Rethinking the future of plastics - marine litter and the circular economy'. The conference contained presentations from scientific academia, the NGO sector, industry representatives and policy makers to allow for a multi-stakeholder view. The conference was convened by Gesine Meissner, MEP, Chair of the SEARICA-Intergroup and Ricardo Serrao Santos, MEP and Vice-President of the SEARICA-Intergroup in charge of Marine Knowledge.
With the Commission's Circular Economy Package, proposals to review the Waste Directives, and joint interests by different sectors to prevent waste happening in the first place, the European Parliament suggests a new promising plastics strategy might be on the rise, one where the inclusion of marine litter is indispensable.
