Irish Government launches plan to double its oceans wealth

On 31 July Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny launched a Government plan to double the value of Ireland’s ocean wealth to 2.4% of the Irish GDP by 2030. The report, ‘Harnessing Our Ocean Wealth - An Integrated Marine Plan for Ireland’ was presented at the Marine Institute, Galway.

UN launches ocean protection initiative

On 12 August the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the Oceans Compact, an initiative to improve the health of oceans, protect and sustain ocean environments and strengthen ocean knowledge and management.

Cyprus EU Presidency to “re-energize” the EU Integrated Maritime Policy

From July to December, Cyprus will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU. During the Presidency Cyprus will put high priority the Integrated Maritime Policy as an important tool in meeting the objectives of the “EU 2020 Strategy”. Another strategic priority for Cyprus will be the negotiations on Horizon 2020, the new framework programme for research and innovation.

Solutions to Effective Knowledge Capture and Transfer discussed at MarineTT workshop

On 23rd May 2012, the MarineTT consortium organised an “Open Stakeholder Workshop to Explore the Challenges and Solutions to Effective Knowledge Capture and Transfer” as a satellite event to the European Commission Green Week. The workshop focused on the barriers that are preventing the uptake of knowledge generated by European funded research and the subsequent effect this has on innovation.

EUs biggest ever call for marine and maritime research

On the 10th of July 2012 the third and final cross-thematic call of its kind will be launched under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) "The Ocean of Tomorrow 2013". The call has a budget of 55 million Euro. On June 6th, 2012 an information day took place in Brussels for a first meeting between prospective partners.
