Italy - Large scale programme launched
Italy has launched its main coordinating initiative for marine and maritime research named RITMARE Flagship Programme, The Italian research for the sea. RITMARE is funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and has a budget of 250 Million euro for the period 2012-2016.
The RITMARE programme is led by the National Research Council of Italy but involves most of the Italian marine and maritime research organizations/universities. Industries will also play a major role in developing the Programme and working in tight link with the researchers.
RITMARE is organised into 7 sub-projects strongly interconnected: Maritime Technologies, Technologies for a Sustainable Fishery, Coastal Zone Management and Maritime Spatial Planning, Deep Sea Research and Resources, Ocean Observing Systems, Research Infrastructures and Capacity Building, Inter-operable Infrastructure for Marine Data.
Reduction of fragmentation, focus on technology development and transfer and support to excellence are the main goals of RITMARE. One of the main deliverables of the project will be a new Research Vessel for open ocean worldwide research missions, that will strengthen the Italian Oceanographic Fleet.
RITMARE has explicitly addressed JPI Oceans as one of the main references for the common strategic role in building the European Research Area and has a unique opportunity to implement joint actions.
