On World Ocean Day, JPI Oceans will host a special Facebook Live focusing on the potential for sustainable marine ingredients originating from underutilized and waste material from fisheries and aquaculture. The event will feature one of the first projects funded under the BlueBio ERA-NET Cofund.

An ocean of untapped potential for new ingredients: are we ready?

Aquatic biomass from the seas and oceans has large potential to ensure future food, feed and nutrition security. It can also be source of raw materials for use in value chains for high value products and processes including pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, bioprocessing, chemicals, novel materials and cosmetics, all while factoring in environment and climate change risks.

To explore and harness these potentials in a sustainable way at the European level, JPI Oceans collaborated in 2018 with the former ERA-NETs COFASP and ERA MBT in founding the BlueBio ERA-NET Cofund, with 27 partners from 16 countries.

For this Facebook live event, JPI Oceans is pleased to welcome as guest speaker Mr. Themis Altintzoglou from Nofima, the coordinating institution of the BlueCC project, one of the first funded projects under the BlueBio ERA-NET Cofund.

BlueCC focuses on sustainably exploiting polymers derived from underutilized marine species, by-catch and cleaner fish from the aquaculture industry to develop new eco-friendly marine ingredients and commercialized products using a market acceptance approach.
