JPI Climate and JPI Oceans are collaborating on this initiative to assess the latest scientific knowledge on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Launched with a planning meeting in Brussels in January 2025, AMOC in Focus bringing together experts from 11 supporting countries (BE, CA, DE, DK, FR, IE, IT, NO, PT, UK, US). Led by co-chairs Hans-Otto Pörtner (Alfred Wegener Institute) and Gerard McCarthy (Maynooth University), the initiative will result in a scientific assessment report examining the current state and evolution of the AMOC, future projections, evidence for possible tipping points, potential impacts on climate, ecosystems, and societies, as well as adaptation, mitigation, and governance solutions.
Following a first writing workshop held in Lecce, Italy, in January 2026, this second workshop marks the next step in advancing the report. The meeting will focus on advancing the coherence of the report, strengthening cross-chapter integration, and addressing key scientific questions.
