In response to the call which brought together up to €8.2 million, thirteen project proposals involving partners from all eight participating countries were received.

All proposals taken together requested over €16.2 million in funding. In the subsequent phase they will be evaluated by independent, international peer referees and ranked by an evaluation panel. The successful projects are expected to be announced by the start of May.

Underwater noise call

In December 2021, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania and Spain under the framework of JPI Oceans and together with BANOS, BlueMed, NOAA and the UN Ocean Decade, launched a call on Underwater Noise in the Marine Environment. The overall aim of the call is to decrease the existing high levels of uncertainty and to promote specific lines of research that will contribute to the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive at regional sub-basin scale, and, therewith, contributing to reach the Good Environmental Status of the European seas and oceans. The call addresses two main challenges in the field: Theme 1: Effects of anthropogenic noise pollution on marine ecosystems, Theme 2: Innovative seismic sources as an option for quieter and effective alternatives to conventional marine geophysical exploration.
